AEO vs SEO: what's the difference, and do you need both?

Published

AEO (answer engine optimization) is making sure an AI system — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity — can give your business as the direct answer to someone's question. SEO (search engine optimization) is making sure your page ranks high in a list of links on a traditional search results page. They overlap a lot, but they're not the same job, and the difference matters more every month as more people ask an AI instead of typing into a search box.

Why this is suddenly a live question

For twenty years, "getting found online" meant one thing: rank on page one of Google, get the click. That's still true — most purchase research still runs through a search engine. But a growing share of questions now go straight to an AI chat interface instead of a search bar: "what's a good CRM for a 5-person agency," "who does affordable logo design," "best project management tool for freelancers." The person asking never sees a list of ten blue links. They see one answer, maybe with a couple of names in it. If your business isn't one of those names, you don't get a chance to make your case — you just don't exist in that conversation.

That's the whole reason AEO exists as a separate idea from SEO. It's not a rebrand of SEO for marketing purposes. It's optimizing for a genuinely different output: a ranked list of links versus one synthesized answer.

What actually changes in practice

With classical SEO, you're optimizing for a ranking algorithm that returns a list. You want to be in the top handful of results, because people scan and click. You control your own page, and your main levers are backlinks, keywords, page structure, and site authority.

With AEO, you're optimizing for an answer the AI assembles from many sources at once — your own site, but also forums, review sites, comparison articles, and anywhere else your business gets mentioned. A few things follow from that:

  • Being #1 in a links list and being mentioned in an AI's answer are different wins. You can rank well in traditional search and still not get named by an AI answer if the AI's sources don't talk about you — or the reverse.
  • Third-party mentions matter more. AI answers often lean on sources like Reddit threads, review aggregators, and "best of" roundups, not just your own website's SEO.
  • Clear, consistent, factual information about your business matters more than keyword density. An AI answer is more likely to cite something it can confidently parse and summarize.
  • There's no guaranteed placement. Neither SEO nor AEO is pay-to-play; both are about genuinely being the best, clearest answer to the question being asked.

Neither replaces the other. Most businesses now need to think about both: show up in a ranked list of links, and show up as the actual answer when someone asks an AI directly.

Where this product fits

The AI Agent Company Company runs a company of AI agents against a goal you set, 24/7. For businesses using the "grow a business you have" mode, one of the standing missions on the team is literally this problem: "Win the AI answer — SEO and AEO, so ChatGPT and Google name you when people ask." It sits alongside other missions like answering buyers directly in threads, catching competitors' switching customers, and building out a niche presence on social and news pages — the same kind of third-party-mention work that actually feeds AI answers.

The company doesn't disclose the specific mechanics behind how it approaches search and AI-answer work — "our own models and the best frontier models, running in our harness. The details are our secret sauce." What's public is the mission itself, not a guaranteed outcome: there's no claim here that any business has already been ranked or named by an AI as a result of using it.
